Challenge: Off-Label Usage
Working with pharmaceutical companies, we hear the phrase “off-label use” used more and more. What exactly does this refer to?
Off-label use refers to the prescribing of drugs for treatment outside of the regulatory-approved label or indication. While this practice certainly has its pros and cons, it’s interesting to note how off-label use works in our own personal lives, outside of the pharmaceutical space. With the economic crisis, the push to go green, and a “simpler lifestyle” mentality emerging, off-label consumer product usage makes sense on several levels.
We’ve listed below a sampling of how consumer products are used “off-label,” and thought we’d issue a challenge to our readers. Send us your favorite or most unique off-label consumer product example via our Comments; we’ll decide on the most interesting one and send you a brand salsa coffee mug. -Baby powder on grease spots (on clothes) to remove spots
-Hydrogen Peroxide for Teeth whitening
-Frosty (from Wendy’s) as a dipping sauce for nuggets and fries
-Spray Coke on body for a darker tan (must not be caffeine free or diet)
-Beer (Bud) and pineapple juice to give flavor to Turkey (before cooking; let it soak)
-put sugar on a busted lip to stop the bleeding (coagulate the blood)
-surfwax (surf board wax) in a bath tub so that you don’t slip
-Sprite or 7up on a pot with Flowers for long lasting life
-use Popsicle sticks to wrap around and immobilize a broken finger

WD-40 to remove bug guts from your car
Vinegar to clean your coffee maker, windows, floorboards, pretty much anything!
Dryer sheets to remove soap scum on a glass shower door

-Cheap cream hair conditioner as shaving cream
-Mayonaise to get a ring off that is stuck on your finger
-Newspaper as wrapping paper
-Clear nail polish to seal plastic (I use it when I make shrinky dinks :) )
-Vinegar on jellyfish stings
-Tea bags for puffy eyes
-Blender as a coffee bean grinder

- Bounce (or any kind of dryer sheet) in toilet paper roll to keep bathroom smelling fresh
- Potato cut in half to remove broken light bulb stuck in it’s socket
- Wire Coat hanger to open car door (only on your own car :P)
- Vinegar to remove pet stain odor
- Salt on carpet to remove red wine stain
- Nail polish remover to remove Hannah tattoos from your child’s skin
- Coca Cola removes rust stains
- Credit cards to open locked doors (only if you’ve locked yourself out of your own house)

- if you drop an egg…put salt on it, so that the egg white does not go everywhere and it’s easy to clean.
-Ditto on the chapstick…

Coffee filter = use with a potted plant to keep soil from seeping out.
Olive Oil = Hand moisturizer–I learned this from an older Italian woman…she never has dry hands in the winter :-)
