More Than Words

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
It’s that time of year again. Time to tell that special someone how you truly feel…through candy hearts of course! Who needs love letters and flowers? Pass your significant other a real piece of sugar and call it a day.

Sweethearts have a history that dates back to the time of Abraham Lincoln, so it’s understandable that NECCO, the company responsible for its popularity, has managed to perfect the art of candy messaging. Check out the fascinating story here.

Year after year, the company melts consumer’s hearts with simple phrases including “be mine,” “kiss me,” and “my man.”

I’ve always wondered how NECCO decides on the more trendy sayings, such as “text me”, and I was surprised to discover that there are actually ten new sayings launched annually based on a theme. Last year’s theme was weather and nature-inspired. This included such genius messages as “Melt My Heart,” “In a Fog,” “Chill Out,” and, my favorite, “Cloud Nine.” What’s this year’s theme you ask? I have three words for you… “Menu of Love.” If you’re as intrigued as I was, learn more here.

For those of you who are still questioning the popularity of these sugar delights, here’s a little 411 for you. In order to meet the demands of only a six week period, NECCO diligently works 11 months out of the year to produce over 8 billion Sweethearts.

So, this year consider continuing a 200 year long tradition by giving Sweethearts to you sweetheart. It’s an inexpensive symbol of affection that goes a long way, literally. Apparently the candy stays fresh for at least five years…I’m still deciding on whether or not this is a good thing. Any suggestions on next year’s theme?
